[HB] The Western Canon by Harold Bloom

The Western Canon by Harold Bloom [HB]

Published in 1994
This is the longest list of all, with more than 1300 entires. Remarkably, two-thirds made the master list. The list is actually the last chapter of a book on Western thought, culture, and history by Harold Bloom, who is the arguably most influential literary critic of this generation. Of course he’s also painfully opinionated, histrionic and controversial. What other person but a blowhard would aspire to delineate the bounds of the Western Canon by himself? Because he is running the show solo, Bloom picks some battles with fan favorites. He’s said Maya Angelou can’t write her way out of a paper bag, and in one letter to the Boston Globe he called Stephen King an “immensely inadequate writer” and, if faced with children reading J. K. Rowling or nothing at all, he’d prefer the latter.

In his version of the canon, it is telling that Bloom gives critical attention to everything up through the 19th century and then offers a data dump of books from the last hundred years, as if he can hardly be bothered to be selective of this lesser past century. Note which books he does not include. Waugh gets four plugs, but no Brideshead Revisited, his most critically acclaimed and popular work by far. Same with Anthony Burgess, who famously loathed the popularity he received from writing A Clockwork Orange at the expense of his more “serious” work and criticism. Bloom seems to sympathize. No Clockwork here, though seven other compilations consider that book list-worthy. Treat Bloom like you should treat the music review site Pitchfork. A good place for leads, but don’t take the cheek too seriously.

Works marked in RED appeared on at least one other of the twenty-four “Great Works” lists I’ve compiled, and so made the Master List.
