The 200 Books You Need to Read

You could say I am playing into a stereotype by fretting over what really are the most important books that everyone should read. But these things do matter! Consider this 2008 piece in the New York Times that bemoans poorly-read sexual partners. It probably caused a lot of anxiety among the fairly well-read.

“It tells something about … their level of intellectual curiosity, what their style is,” Fels said. “It speaks to class, educational level.”

At one point in the piece a character laments of an old boyfriend: “Can you believe it! He hadn’t even heard of Pushkin!”

Now, imagine how many millions of folks there are who read that and think, “My God! I’ve heard of Pushkin, but I haven’t read anything by him!”

I sympathize. Even among the so-called classics, there are just too many to read without assigning yourself an asinine and bloated commission. Add to that, we really should not just be reading the classics, but also works relevant to our time. So, given that there are more books published every week in this country than there were in all of 1950, what should we read?

Yale Professor Jeffrey Brenzel offers this advice for determining what really is a classic.

His criteria are that the work 1) addresses universal human concerns; 2) is a cultural game-changer; 3) influences other great writers or world leaders; 4) is respected by critics; and 5) is challenging yet rewarding.

I would only quibble with the last point. There are countless examples of classics that are, on their faces, not overly challenging in their length, ideas, or language. But Dr. Brenzel doesn’t deliver any of these criteria as commandments, but merely guidelines.

And they are valid guidelines, on the whole. If we look at the lengthy Master List I assembled from 24 “great book” authorities, we can see these criteria shining through. But what about a “Best of the Best” list? What books, in short, contain the most important narratives and ideas of our culture? Put another way, if someone were to ask you, “What books should I really read before I die?” what would be the short list?

Below is my answer: the most highly-regarded books of all the 24 lists I surveyed. But even this listing is a bit of a cheat. It’s actually two lists. One is the 100 greatest books written before 1900, and another is 100 important books written in the last 100+ years. Why two lists? Because most of the “great book” authorities I consult divide themselves into two camps, the “all time” crowd or just those considering the 20th century. That gives lopsided attention to books from recent decades, meriting two distinct lists. But all in all, if you have read these two 100 book lists, it’s fair to say you have a handle on the Western World’s most influential works, at least as seen with today’s eyes.

My only criticism of the listing is that it misses texts that one would not consider “Western” but are nevertheless hugely influential to modern society: namely, the Qu’ran, the  Analects of Confucius, and Bhagavad Gita. If you are going to understand our world, those are three books you need to read.
